The NDSS started in 1987 and is funded by the Australian Government.
Diabetes Australia administers the Scheme on the Government’s behalf.
To register with the NDSS, applicants must be diagnosed with diabetes and hold or be eligible to hold a
Medicare card and live in Australia. Sometimes visitors to Australia may be eligible through a
Reciprocal Health Care Agreement with their home country.
People who are registered with the NDSS can access a range of subsidised Government approved products including:
- subsidised testing strips for checking blood gluclose levels
- free insulin syringes and pen-needles (if you require insulin)
- subsidised insulin pump consumables (IPCs)
- information services on managing life with diabetes.
Eligible persons can only be registered by their doctor or a Credentialled Diabetes Educator (CDE). A Registration Form can be downloaded from this website or is available by calling 1300 136 588.

The NDSS aims to enhance the capacity of people with diabetes to understand and manage their life with diabetes and to ensure they have timely, reliable and affordable access to the supplies and services they require to effectively self-manage their diabetes.

Diabetes Australia has established a network of state-based Agents to assist in the delivery of the NDSS. Currently, all NDSS Agents are state and territory member organisations of Diabetes Australia.
An Agent may appoint Sub-Agents, which are usually pharmacies, to perform a number of functions and responsibilities under the Scheme.

In 2006 Diabetes Australia launched a new logo for the NDSS. The NDSS logo was developed to give the Scheme a unique identity, which is easily recognisable and which acknowledges the significant financial support provided by the Australian Government. By including the Diabetes Australia logo, it also symbolises the key partnership that is in place to help people living with diabetes.

NDSS outlets can be identified by distinctive NDSS signage. All NDSS outlets should clearly display the NDSS logo.
