Diabetes Australia Committees 

Diabetes Australia oversees various committees across different specialist areas. These committees assist Diabetes Australia in achieving its strategic intent.

The Medical, Education and Scientific Council (MESC) is a committee of the National Board of Diabetes Australia (DA) and is responsible to the National Board. The MESC is a composite body providing a vehicle for ADS and ADEA to advise and provide strategic direction to the DA Board on relevant medical, education and scientific matters.

The Health Care and Education Committee (HCEC) as a Committee of the Board of DA will:

  • Review and recommend endorsement of all Diabetes Australia national publications and materials which have a health care and education component.
  • Recommend for endorsement, publications, materials and products produced by other agencies which have sought endorsement and use of the Diabetes Australia logo.
  • Clear all public statements, promotional material, scripts, articles produced on behalf of Diabetes Australia, which have a health care and education component.
  • Advise on the planning, co-ordination, implementation and evaluation of diabetes health care and education services nationally.

The Executive Committee of the Board (Board Executive) ensures the continuous operation of the business of Diabetes Australia between meetings of the full Board.

The Finance & Audit and Risk Management Committee (FARM) provides assistance to the Board of Directors in fulfilling its corporate governance and oversight responsibilities in relation to the Company's financial reporting, internal control structure, risk management systems, and external audit functions.

The Conquest Editorial Advisory Committee is convened under the auspices of the Diabetes Australia Ltd Board. The Committee advises Diabetes Australia Ltd on editorial content for Conquest and provide information such as contacts, resource material and write articles where appropriate.

The Parliamentary Diabetes Support Group (PDSG)

In 2000, The Hon Judi Moylan MP established the Parliamentary Diabetes Support Group (PDSG) with bi-partisan support from executive members Dr Mal Washer MP, Senator Guy Barnett, The Hon Dick Adams MP and former member Mr Cameron Thompson.

The Parliamentary Diabetes Support Group was established to:

  • raise awareness of diabetes types 1 and 2 among Members of Parliament and staff
  • act as a conduit to Ministers to improve policy responses to management, education and research
  • offer support to Members, Senators and staff working Parliament House who have been diagnosed with diabetes
  • liaise with industry groups, research organisations and allied health professionals
  • promote the development of public policies and increase public awareness and knowledge of comprehensive management regimes
  • host or co-host a minimum of two events each year to highlight the public health risks of the diabetes epidemic
  • draw world-wide attention to the complications and quality of life implications and the effect on health budgets if governments do not act
  • encourage all parliaments to establish support groups.

Diabetes Research Foundation of Western Australia

The Diabetes Research Foundation of Western Australia has been in existence for over thirty years and has raised and distributed over $1.3 million towards diabetes research in WA. Additionally the Diabetes Research Foundation has raised $2.5 million towards the establishment of a Centre for Diabetes Research in Perth. More…

Kellion Diabetes Foundation

The Kellion Diabetes Foundation was established by Claude Kellion after his son, John, died as a result of the complications of diabetes. For many years, it was the only privately funded diabetes research in Australia. The Foundation has donated well in excess of $1 million towards diabetes research.
