Diabetes Australia-Queensland is assisting those most affected by the floods in far north Queensland by continuing to send through much needed supplies to the hardest hit areas.

While the devastating floods in far north Queensland have left the area in isolation, Diabetes Australia-Queensland has assured people with diabetes in these areas that they will continue to access their much needed diabetes supplies.

“We originally thought we would have to organise an airdrop to deliver the supplies to flood affected areas, however we, Diabetes Australia-Queensland, with the help of Australia post were able to continue to get the supplies through so that residents can still access products to effectively manage their diabetes.” said National President Dr. Gary Deed.

Through the National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS), people living with diabetes are able to access diabetes products such as glucose testing strips, syringes and needles at subsidised prices from pharmacies who have signed on as NDSS Sub-Agents. The NDSS is an initiative of the Australian Government administered by Diabetes Australia.

“For people to manage their diabetes effectively, they require constant access to diabetes products to live healthy lives. Without these supplies a person with diabetes is at risk of falling into a hyperglycaemic (high blood sugar level) or hypoglycaemic (low blood sugar level) state. If either of these complications occur, a person can have serious short term and long term consequences.”

Latest statistics show the number of people affected by diabetes in Queensland is as many as 146 894 individuals.

Diabetes Australia is dedicated to turning diabetes around through awareness, management, prevention, detection and cure, and is dedicated to assisting those living with diabetes in times of crisis.
