Diabetes Australia Research Trust (DART) Grant Process

·          DART grant round opens in February

·        An advertisement seeking DART Grant application appears in the Australian Newspaper in February

·         Flyers seeking DART Grant Applications are sent to tertiary institutions and stakeholders

·         The DART Grant application and supporting guidelines are available on the  Diabetes Australia Website

·         Applications close in April

·         All applications that are received before the deadline and meet the requirements of the guidelines are processed and the applicant receives a receipt

·         Applicants can apply for all three of the grants types (General Grants, Millennium Grants and the Viertel Award), however only one application will be accepted per grant type. An applicant can be successful in each grant type provided the project is different for each grant.

·         Each application is accepted on the condition that the applicant and participants make themselves available to complete peer reviews

·         The review process is overseen by the chairman of the Advisory Grants Committee and is administered by the DART team in the Diabetes Australia office.

·         The chairman of the Advisory Grants Committee is appointed by the DART Board.

·         The DART Grants are governed by an independent board of directors.

·         The review process begins with all applications being examined by the Advisory Grants Committee for conflict of interest and the determination of the best reviewers for each application.

·         Eligibility criteria for each grant type are detailed in the guidelines and applicants are required to check eligibility prior to applying.   Specific attention should be given to the criteria for the Viertel Fellowship.

·         Each general application has a minimum of 3 reviews and Millennium Grant and the Viertel Award have 5 reviews.

·         Reviewers are provided guidelines and scoresheets and have available access to the Advisory Panel for further support via the DART team.

 ·         Applications are sent to reviewers and the completed score sheets are returned to DART Team

·         The DART Team maintains all records centrally and coordinates each and every review

·         When all reviews are finalised the scores and comments are adjudicated by the Advisory Grants Committee

·         The scores are tallied and ranked from highest to lowest

·        The DART Board meets in October to determine the funds available, discuss the round process with the chairman of the Advisory Panel and allocate grants based to merit

·         All successful applicants are contacted in early November and need to complete a certification form, lay report and acceptance letter.

·         DART does not co-fund, therefore if a recipient accepts funding for the same project elsewhere the DART funding is forfeited

·         Grants are announced in the week of World Diabetes Day

·         All unsuccessful applicants are contacted by the DART team and reviewers' comments will be provided on request
