Summary of Projects 2010-2011

Employment of Aboriginal Health Workers/ Liaison Officers

Project Overview

In 2009/2010, funding was provided under the Strategic Development Grant (SDG) to support the engagement of Aboriginal Medical Services (AMSs), Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs) and other health providers in Indigenous communities to increase NDSS registration by Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The 2009/10 project had three elements:

Element 1: Engagement with Aboriginal Medical Services (AMSs) and Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations (ACCHOs) through the employment of Aboriginal Health Workers (AHWs) or Aboriginal Liaison Officers (ALOs).

Element 2: Developing National Resources for Indigenous People.

Element 3: Diabetes Training for AHWs or ALOs.

Message Sticks pilot program

Project Overview

To be effective in making real changes within the ATSI communities, it is essential to engage communities in the development and implementation of the prevention and management strategies. The capacity of AMS and their communities must be bolstered to deliver evidence based health programs that improve the health of the community. We are proposing to develop a program that addresses these significant issues in a culturally relevant way, and that empowers the AMS to effectively address the issue of diabetes in their communities.

The Message Sticks project is aligned with the goals of the 2009/10 SDG “Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Peoples” project, including increasing engagement with Aboriginal Medical Services and Aboriginal Community Controlled Health Organisations, and training in and distribution of resources to assist in the management of diabetes.
