Sex and diabetes

Remaining sexually active helps you burn energy, strengthen muscles, lower blood pressure and feel more connected to your partner.

But some health problems, and medicines you may need to take for these, can have a direct effect on your desire, your state of arousal and your ability to achieve an orgasm.

Maintaining your sexual health

There are many ways to help you maintain your sexual health as you get older:

  • follow a healthy eating plan
  • remain physically active
  • manage your blood glucose levels
  • reduce stress and anxiety
  • avoid alcohol in excess
  • reduce or quit smoking
  • maintain a healthy weight.

Talking about your sexual health can feel uncomfortable, but it is important to discuss any concerns with your doctor or nurse practitioner. They can give you support and advice about treatment options.
