Dexcom G7 to be Subsidised Through the NDSS from 1 March 2025

Published:

The Australian Government has confirmed that from 1 March 2025, the Dexcom G7 Continuous Glucose Monitoring (CGM) sensors will be subsidised through the National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS). This means that eligible people registered with the NDSS will be able to access Dexcom G7 at a subsidised cost, in line with existing CGM access arrangements.

Who is Eligible?

Eligibility for subsidised CGM products through the NDSS remains unchanged.

  • All people with type 1 diabetes are eligible to apply for subsidised CGM.
  • Some people under the age of 21 with rare conditions similar to type 1 diabetes on insulin may also be eligible .

How to Access Dexcom G7 Through the NDSS

To access Dexcom G7, eligible individuals must:

  • Consult an authorised diabetes health professional (such as an endocrinologist, credentialled diabetes educator, diabetes nurse practitioner, physician, or paediatrician) from 1 March 2025 to update their CGM access.
  • GPs and practice nurses are not authorised to certify CGM access forms.
  • Health professionals are encouraged to use the NDSS Health Professional Portal to process CGM access updates quickly.
  • People are encouraged to update their details and create a My NDSS account to receive notifications when their CGM access has been updated.
  • Once access is updated, Dexcom G7 can be ordered through NDSS Access Points (usually a community pharmacy) from 1 March.

Transitioning to Dexcom G7

If you are planning to switch to Dexcom G7, we recommend ensuring you have enough of your current CGM supplies to last until at least 15 March 2025. This is to account for any potential product availability delays during the initial launch period.

Important Information

  • Sensor lifespan: Each Dexcom G7 sensor lasts 10 days before needing replacement.
  • Ordering limits: A maximum of 3 months’ worth of sensors (9 sensors) can be ordered per transaction. As with all CGM products, annual product limits apply.
  • Fault reporting: Any issues with the device should be reported according to manufacturer guidelines.
  • The NDSS Code for Dexcom G7 sensors is 990.
  • For individuals who have a co-pay for CGM sensors, it will be $11.60 per Dexcom G7 sensor.
  • All CGM products have annual access limits which have been developed from the manufacturers recommended usage guide.
