Published: 6 December, 2024 The National Diabetes Services Scheme (NDSS), in partnership with the Australian Diabetes Educators Association (ADEA), is excited to announce the release of My Diabetes Sick Day Action Plans. These resources are designed to help people living with diabetes manage their condition during illness and know when to seek medical assistance. Illnesses and infections can impact blood glucose levels, making diabetes management more challenging. Whether it’s causing levels to rise or drop unexpectedly, being prepared with a sick day action plan is important for staying on top of your health during such times. Why is a Sick Day Action Plan Important? Planning ahead with a sick day action plan can help individuals: Monitor blood glucose levels more effectively. Adjust or pause diabetes medications, including insulin doses, if necessary. Prepare suitable foods and drinks for when eating is difficult. Identify when to call a healthcare professional or seek urgent medical help. Tailored Support for Different Needs To address the varying needs of people living with diabetes, NDSS has developed eight different action plans tailored to different types of diabetes management. Each plan offers specific guidance to help individuals navigate illness while minimising risks to their health. How to create a Sick Day Action Plan The ADEA recommends working with a Credentialled Diabetes Educator (CDE) to create and maintain a personalised sick day plan. It’s also important to prepare a sick day kit and regularly check and update it to ensure everything is ready when needed. Be Prepared for Sick Days Here are some practical tips for managing diabetes during illness: Have a plan: Know when to activate your sick day action plan. Keep a sick day kit ready: Regularly check and replace any expired items. Monitor frequently: Understand how often to check blood glucose levels. Prepare suitable foods and drinks: Stock options you can consume while unwell. Seek help when needed: Know who to contact for advice or support. Be alert to emergencies: Recognise when urgent medical attention is required. Access the Action Plans The My Diabetes Sick Day Action Plans are now available. We encourage everyone living with diabetes to download the relevant plan, discuss it with their CDE, and ensure they’re prepared for any eventuality. Download a sick day action plan here.
